When instrument location makes the difference on rainfall thresholds definition: Lessons learned at Cancia, Dolomites

چکیده
Since debris flows represent one of the most dangerous natural hazard in mountain areas, Early Warning Systems (EWSs) play a crucial role reducing risk these hazardous processes. Robust event pre-alert usually relies on long time series local rainfall measures. Oftentimes regional rain gauge networks present an insufficient spatial density to grasp highly variable spatio-temporal dynamics debris-flow triggering events and thus relying such for developing thresholds might lead relatively low estimates. The paper reports development operational Cancia EWS, Dolomites (NE Italy). instrumentation configuration led derivation implementation set that significantly enhanced pre-alarm reliability thanks optimal distribution multiple gauges within catchment. Notwithstanding small number occurred during calibration period, were derived considering whole population showcasing statistical properties those initiation. Finally, validation period served as proof work proposed with no raised false alarms identification few minor, but correctly detected, flows.

Relations between rainfall and triggering of debris-flow: case study of Cancia (Dolomites, Northeastern Italy)
Debris-flows occurring in the area of Cancia (Dolomites, Northeastern Italy) in recent years have exposed the population to serious risk. In response to the recurring hazard, an alarm and monitoring system was installed to provide a sufficient level of safeguard for inhabitants and infrastructures. The data recorded at three rain gauges during debris-flow events has been analysed, taking into c...
متن کاملOutcome in aortic stenosis: when the flow makes the difference.
Aortic stenosis (AS) was first described as an isolated disease involving the aortic valve leaflets. However, in the past years, the concept has evolved with noteworthy changes, and now, AS is looked upon as a complex, ‘‘systemic’’ disease. Much of our current understanding regarding AS comes from past studies showing that patients with degenerative AS do not have a normal arterial function; th...

Dear Editor, I read with great interest the article by Webber and Barr on the ageand gender-dependent values of skeletal muscle mass in healthy children and adolescents [1]. The authors open a field of scientific dispute that is often underrepresented if not totally neglected. The validity of any method of measurement depends not only on the appropriate choice of a certain method according to t...

متن کاملExogenous lipoid pneumonia (ELP): when radiologist makes the difference
Lipoid pneumonia is an uncommon disorder characterized by accumulation of lipid components into the interstitial and alveolar compartment. The usual classification distinguishes endogenous and exogenous and acute or chronic forms, related to the type of fats, the amount of damage and the time of exposure. We describe a case of exogenous lipoid pneumonia by inhalation of vaseline used for cleani...
